Seafarer: The Ship Sim is a maritime career sim from astragon that left Early Access on September 24, 2026, and this guide is the short route from your first tug job to a working fleet. It covers how the career loop fits together, which systems unlock early, how to handle a ship without over-correcting, and how to fast travel in Seafarer: The Ship Sim when a transit would otherwise eat your session.

What the Game Actually Is

The official pitch is deliberately broad: take the helm of vessels ranging from small boats to cargo ships and tankers, take contracts from different factions, and build reputation across the harbours of a fictional open world inspired by Northern Europe. Missions cover cargo transport, rescue, firefighting and patrol work, and the interactive tools include cranes, water cannons, drones and rescue equipment. The game offers two modes — a story-driven campaign that follows Teddy, an experienced captain with a troubled past, and Quickplay for jumping straight into individual jobs.

Under the presentation sits Unreal Engine 5 with NVIDIA WaveWorks 2.0 water, which is the feature the official site leans on hardest for atmosphere. It is a handling and process sim rather than a tycoon spreadsheet: you walk the deck, open doors, work panels and operate machinery yourself.

Your First Hours: Tutorial and First Jobs

The Gaming Nexus hands-on preview describes the tutorial as letting you try ships and missions for two factions: Crescent Port Logistics, which runs traditional cargo lines, and Tide Patrol, which provides maritime policing services. In that preview the first substantial task was pushing a large freighter into dock with a tugboat, which sets expectations correctly — this is a game about doing the work rather than picking it from a menu.

The Full Release notes moved two unlocks forward so the opening is less of a wall: Fast Travel is available from Level 1, and Crew becomes available at Level 2. If you feel like you are running out of good work, look at the harbour reputation track rather than the job list, because the top-tier special missions are gated behind it.

How to Fast Travel in Seafarer: The Ship Sim

Fast travel is a career feature, and the Full Release notes state plainly that Fast Travel now unlocks at Level 1, so a fresh career has it almost immediately. The Patch 1.0.1 public beta then added dedicated Fast Travel buttons at harbours and, at the same time, disabled fast travel while you are inside a harbour area.

  • Use the harbour Fast Travel buttons added in the Patch 1.0.1 beta branch.
  • Open the Job Menu and use Travel To to move directly to a job or destination.
  • Expect fast travel to be disabled while you are inside a harbour area, per the same 1.0.1 patch notes.
  • Do not lean on it in co-op yet: the 1.0.1 known-issues list warns that using Travel To in multiplayer can crash clients, and more often over longer distances.

Trading is the other half of the economy. The official feature list covers bulk goods, containers and LNG, and the Full Release notes say an automatically completed Free Trade operation now calculates its price from the remaining cargo instead of a fixed value. If a trade will not start, that is usually because another trade or shift is already active — the same notes say feedback for that case was improved. Ship customisation (names, colours, flags and logos) is cosmetic.

Controls, Modes and Settings

Seafarer supports full controller input, and the Full Release notes added separate dead zones for steering and throttle, which is worth tuning early because the preview reported that small inputs can produce large over-corrections until you build muscle memory. On PC, push-to-talk can now be rebound. The official FAQ confirms that keybindings are fully customisable and that the world runs a dynamic day and night cycle with dynamic weather.

Swapping between first and third person is free at any time. First person is generally the better place to operate panels, cranes and interior stations, while third person makes it easier to judge distance when docking.

If you only remember one thing, treat the throttle as a suggestion and the rudder as a commitment: ease into turns and plan them early. The early levels are forgiving enough that a botched approach rarely ends a run, so use them to learn each hull instead of rushing to the biggest ship you can afford.

FAQ

1.When did Seafarer: The Ship Sim leave Early Access?

Full release was September 24, 2026, announced on Steam as "Seafarer: The Ship Sim - Full Release Is Here!". The game had entered Early Access on October 7, 2025, and the first hotfix followed on release day.

2.How many players can play Seafarer: The Ship Sim together?

Up to four. The official site and the Steam description both say you build your maritime career solo or in multiplayer with a crew of up to 4 players.

3.How do you unlock fast travel?

It is a career unlock, not a settings toggle. The Full Release notes state that Fast Travel now unlocks at Level 1, and the Patch 1.0.1 public beta added dedicated Fast Travel buttons at harbours.

4.Which platforms is Seafarer: The Ship Sim on?

PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, plus PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official site lists all of those storefronts, with a Voyager Edition and a Voyager Pack variant.

5.Does Seafarer have a story campaign?

Yes. A story-driven campaign follows Teddy, an experienced captain with a troubled past, and the official site describes it as a maritime mystery about guilt, trust and redemption. Campaign missions unlock in Quickplay for replay once finished in single-player.
