Systems and progression

The game is a semi-open world survival horror with an inventory system, firearms and melee weapons, and an optional investigation layer. Talents are the progression currency and are bought at safe-room tables with Dream Essence, which comes from connecting evidence, finishing investigations and opening some Emergency Relief Crates. Safe rooms also hold the stash and the record player used to save manually, and the autosave only covers major checkpoints.

The two achievement-linked collectible sets are ten Mushroom Jack radios and thirteen Emergency Relief Crates, both missable within a single run. A third set, the eight Oblivion Writings, only appears in the Ex Oblivione New Game Plus mode.

Setting, creatures and safe codes

The story is set in Arkham in 1929, during a flood that has been rising for three months. Calvin Rafferty and Faye Bennett perform the Ritual of Dreaming, Faye is left in a supernatural coma, and the city is overrun by the Slither, parasitic worms that animate the dead. Later areas add Deep Ones, a Shoggoth, a Mi-Go disguised as a surgeon and the Slither Prime itself.
